Hi

I was wondering if anybody could people me find any information about a man called John Pratt, I know he died of disease on the 29/4/1900 in Bloemfontein, Free State, South Africa. But I am unsure of where he fought in combat up to that point or were he’s buried. He was born in Billington, Bedfordshire in 1873 and his service number was 3961.

Thanks

Welcome to the forum TJ!

3961 Pte J Pratt served in the 2md Worcester Regiment and died of disease in Bloemfontein on 29 Apr 1900. He was interred in the cemetery on President Avenue in Bloemfontein.

He was issued with a medal with two clasps, CC and OFS. The medal roll, WO100/184p135 records that the medal was returned 6 Dec 1908 presumably because the family could not be contacted.

Do you have his medal by any chance?

There is a history of the 2nd Worcesters here and many mentions throughout the site.

Best wishes
David

Hi

Thanks for the help, unfortunately i don't have his Medal but i think this is because of his wife died in birth and his two children were put up for adoption. Would there be anyway of finding his medal or a photo of him? i guess i would have to have family contacts to find things like that.

Thanks

TJ,

That's a sad story.

Local newspapers may carry a photo or it may be worth contacting the regimental museum?

My understanding about the medals returned to the Mint is that they would not subsequently be issued so I would guess his medal no longer exists.

Kind regards
David
