This forum has been amazingly successful in providing info on my grandfather, John Donald Morrison's peripheral involvement in the Boer War and I wonder if anyone could shed light for me on my grandfather's brother-in-law, who appears to have played a more active part in the war:

Alexander Thomas Livingstone "Alistair" Gilroy
Born 4 Oct 1865 in Monifeith, Angus, Scotland
Son of Alex Gilroy, Dunalistair House, Broughty Ferry and Margaret Kyd Livingstone b: 10 Mar 1833 in Inverness (?) or Edinburgh, Midlothian
Married: Charlotte Evelyn "Eva" Shepstone (who was born b: 1869 in South Africa) 5 Jan 1892 in Natal, South Africa
Captain 11th Hussars and Major Reserve of Officers 1890- 1892 Awarded Boer War Medal (?)
1 Jul 1890 Fort Napier, South Africa
Died 15 Jun 1923 in Bridgnorth, Shropshire, England

Thanks, Don

J D

He certainly served in the Boer War. He was in the Commander in Chief's Bodyguard with the rank of Captain in the Reserve of Officers and a local Major. he gained the clasps CC OFS & Tr (WO100/243p187) where it states he helped with the Remount Depot. The SA01 clasp is shown on WO100/243p191.

From the nominal roll on this site (first G entry), you can see his entry showing he joined 21 Nov 00 and served until 17 Jul 01. A note here mentions only the CC and SA01 clasps.

Best wishes
David
