Hello,
Okay, well this is a friendly forum, however, if you prefer not to give his name thats fine, the reason I asked was that I wondered if he was stuck in Kimberley during the awful siege, but, I see he was not.

Looking at him, there are no real surprises, an 18 year old hawker, already in the Militia, so again it is not unfair to assume he was merely headhunted by a recruiter as already mentioned, the Militia was very territorial from a geographic point of view, the Army was not.
Perhaps not exactly what the Army may have wanted upon looking at his statement of service, but, I can tell you I have seen worse, was he a direct ancestor in that you bare his name today?

Hi Frank,

Where could I find out which medals he received? I read in his service record that it says S. Africa 3 Clasps King's 2 clasps from what I could make out of the details. Does that mean that he received the Queens South Africa medal and the King's South Africa medal with clasps or does it mean that he only received the Queen's South Africa medal with 3 clasps and 2 clasps for South Africa in 1901 and 1902? If he did not receive the King's South Africa medal I wonder why not because he was serving in South Africa between February 1899 and August 1902 so wouldn't he have qualified for that medal?

I would appreciate it if you could please private message me regarding his statement of service details as I do not wish to discuss the details on the open forum - even though the forum is friendly. Thank you.

Hello,
WO97 suggests a QSA and three clasps, i.e. Cape Colony, Orange Free State and Transvaal as well as the KSA with both clasps, however, his regiment was in the field from the start and he was with it.
WO100/193 and 336 confirm both medals, but, the QSA would have the Belmont and Modder River clasps rather than the Cape Colony clasp, you could not receive both, I take it that you don't have the medals?
There is nothing to suggest they were not issued.

Thank you for looking into the medals for me, Frank.

So he did receive both medals then. Why would the QSA have the Belmont and Modder River clasps rather than the Cape Colony clasp? I don't have the medals and I'm not sure who would have them now?

Also, I noticed on his service record that he was serving in Ceylon between January 1896 and February 1899. Which battles would his regiment have been involved in there?
