I think it is most likely that your ggf served at Standerton with the Army Service Corps. There was a Natal Volunteer Transport Corps, but, like the NVAC, their activities are likely to have been confined to Natal.

If you give your ggf's full name it should be possible trace his service records, and they might reveal more details to help in your research.

Regards
Brett

Hello Brett - for sure - his name was Arthur Mamet. The record that I found showed AE Mamet for the NVAC and just A Mamet for the time spent at Standerton.
Much appreciated.

The NVAC nominal roll under "Unit information' on this site has the entry:
Albert Edward Mamet, Bearer. Served 13 December 1899 to 12 March 1900

I did not find a record for him under the Army Service Corps, but this was a complicated unit of Imperial men and many others recruited locally, so the help of a more knowledgeable person is needed to establish whether or not he did serve in the ASC.

Brett

I would suggest that Albert Edward Mamet was not the A Mamet shown in WO100277 and WO100/234, this latter is shown as a Conductor of Remounts at Standerton and 7306 Private Thorneycroft's Mounted Infantry.
I think I would check WO126/142-144 to see who 7306 TMI actually was, if his paper remains extant, you certainly could not serve in the NVAC and the TMI at the same point in time.

7306 Pte. Angelo Mamet served with E Co. of TMI from 10/1/00-9/11/00 with subsequent service in Remounts. He hailed from Durban, Natal. Clearly a different Mamet to your man.

Gentlemen thank you. Am I the first to assume that an initial for a forename was somebody else?

It clears up a few inconsistencies in my story anyway. Nonetheless, I suspect that with such an obscure surname they are likely related. I know that they all hailed from Durban.

I have other queries about the Natal Carbineers, I will direct those via the appropriate forum threads. Again, thank you.
