Good morning David,
I am quite sure this sort of thing was perfectly normal, the last few months of the war were the most cruel and you need to bare in mind that many Boers felt nothing should challenge white supremacy in the post war enviroment.
Look at what Manie Maritz did at Leliefontein, on the 31st January 1902, there was a place with food, lots of cattle and horses and a very loyal population, yet left undefended by Kitchener.
Maritz could have just took what he wanted, but no, he torched the whole place, the dead and wounded, around one hundred and fifty, left strewn across the church yard, the survivors enslaved, a community destroyed, because of their loyalty to Great Britain and the colour of their skin.
Kind regards Frank

The Newspaper cutting gives a certain amount of background feel to the prevailing attitude I agree.

Many thanks. I have stumbled across a casualty list for the Indian Troops in South Africa.I am trying to establish more of the circumstances of death hence the question.
Looking for Salutries, Salootries and Veterinary Duffadars.
I collect primarily QSAs to Indian Recipients.

There was some retaliation late in the war as the link above shows.

In the various lists of the Native Scouts of Natal, casualties are recorded as "Killed in Action". There are no "Died of Wounds" or "Died of Disease". In the vast number of records there are no notations of any kind and I suspect that the true numbers of casualties and the circumstances of their deaths will never be known.

There is one exception to the 'KiA' records and it is for "Jacob", whose address was given as "c/o Mr Henderson, Highlands", and he was "Murdered by Boer".

Good morning Brett,
Nothing in this post surprises me and I am reminded of that nasty little scripture, delivered from the pulpit, Mr Churchill received whilst on his way to Pretoria, from a Boer guard, "Educate a Kaffir? yes, thats you English all over, we don't let them walk on the pavement!"
Lebensraum springs to mind here. :(
Kind regards Frank
