Am I correct in thinking that some one from Natal marrying a Freestater was akin to someone from Massachusetts marrying a Virginian after the US Civil War?

Perhaps so in the immediate post-war years. I waited until the war had been over for 60 years, so I was relatively safe, although my father-in-law had hoped for something better from his daughter.
