Excellent café there too.

Nearest is a "German Mauser Model 1895 rifle captured from a Boer soldier." D. J. Kruger Z.A.R.

Behind it is a "Lee Enfield cavalry carbine carried by Captain J. T. C. Murray, of The Black Watch, during the Boer War. The carbine has been altered by having much of its wooden stock cut away to reduce its weight. Captain Murray has also personalised the weapon with his own carved decoration."

"Bolt-action magazine rifle......known as the Lee-Enfield."

Orders and medals awarded to Major General A. G. Wauchope.

Silver medallion commemorating the losses at Magersfontein.

Medals awarded to Pioneer Sergeant T. Howden, 2nd Battalion The Black Watch.

Medals awarded to Private F. Davidson, who served with the 3rd Volunteer Service Company in South Africa. The three medals in the centre were awarded for his WW1 service; the one on the right was presented by the City of Dundee to all Volunteers from the city who served in South Africa.

Colours of the 1st Battalion, carried from 1996 to July 2011.

From a large display of medals awarded for conflicts The Black Watch has taken part in.

Some interesting pics there. The Lee carbine marked for Capt. J.T.C. Murray of the BW is both interesting and had been highly modified. The original barrel has been replaced with one of a rifle-length sporting style; with leaf backsight, sporting forward sling swivel and a very nice looking block-and-blade front sight. He certainly knew what he wanted!
Services of Boer War Officers has him as in the South African war, 1901-02, operations in Orange River Colony, December 01 to May 02, Queen's medal with five clasps.
Good to see "Andy" Wauchope's medals as well.
Best regards
IL.

Fantastic pictures, Berenice. Many thanks.

I remember going there many years ago now and speaking to a guide about the medals to Wauchope. I pronounced the surname as way-shope and was told the correct pronunciation is walk-up.

Has the museum actually reopened, I would have thought there will be issues to resolve, particularly, with the café.

No, not reopened yet. I visited in the middle of February, just before my retirement, and delayed posting the photos till now so as to try to brighten up everyone's lockdown. I still have photos of memorials waiting to be posted.
