I purchased the above medal from a dealer here in Queensland.
It arrived yesterday and I don't have any info on the recipient at all.

No doubt like you mate, I've had a good look on the decorations list on Ancestry for your soldier over the Boer War period to no avail. I hope that we might get a chime in from one of the more seasonal researchers who can shed some light

Hopefully so, I checked the SOTQ site and he doesn’t appear to have served in the Boer War.

Could the surname read Smail??
I found a Trooper J Smail 401 Border Mounted Rifles. Nominal Roll Natal. ABW site has him down as Small. Also QSA medal roll WO 100/ 260 has a J Smail Border Mounted Rifles 3 clasps Cape Colony, OFS and Defence of Ladysmith. Margin notes mention Steinackers Horse. Not sure if this is your man. But name's sometime were misspelt.
Small, Smale & Smail for example.
