1325 Wood - not much paperwork has survived for him - just two pages covering his 1896 Militia attestation for the 3rd (Militia) Battalion of the Gloucestershire Regiment. He was born Charles in Bristol in, if his age of 18 years 0 months is correct, the summer of 1868. There is a third page which shows he became a regular soldier on 7th June 1899 and was discharged on 30th August 1901 but there is nothing to show he served in SA.
2nd Battalion medal rolls show he earned three clasps to his QSA - CC, OFS, SA1901.
The Gloucester Regiment cap badge shows why he might have wanted to embellish his snuff box with two sets of three leaves.
Whoever wrote the note was an uneducated man. Charles gave his occupation as "Labourer". However based on his signature when he attested he was not the writer of the note.
