Dear Cuan
I'm so pleased someone is visiting the site. I've never heard mention of Mrs Mentz's letter, though this forum is a good place to enquire. I don't know about his relatives. (To eliminate one dead-end, a Mr Fanie Mentz farmed about 2 km east of the site (south of Hambrook) but his family only bought that farm in the 1940s. Fanie is recently deceased, and he had no knowledge of Veldkornet Mentz or the action nearby.)
I don't know if you are referring to my article in the Mil Hist J or my book The Spioenkop Campaign. If you don't have a copy of the latter, you can buy one from Three Trees lodge and it should provide plenty of ideas for other routes to wander. Start with Three Tree Hill (start at the lodge, with permission) or the Boer trench line on Platkop to Green Hill, though then you'll need permission from the land owner, Alan Green. Send me a PM if you want to correspond.

The past is not dead. In fact, it's not even past.
