ABO (Komdt. H.P.J. Pretorius). City Coins August 2014.

Jacobsdal was the first Free State town that fell into the hands of the British on the 14th February 1900. Various battles took place at the start of the war on the Western Front, at Belmont, Rooilaagte (Enslin), Twee Riviere and Magersfontein and the annexed district of Jacobsdal.

The battle of Paardeberg took place within the district’s northern borders. Further small skirmishes took place in and around Jacobsdal during the first months of 1900 during the time of Lord Roberts’ offensive to raise the siege of Kimberley and penetrate the Republics.

At the beginning of the war Pretorius held the rank of Assistent Veldkomet. Promotion to Veldkomet followed on 21 November 1899 and to Kommandant on 1 April 1900.
He saw action at Kimberley, Belmont, Twee Rivieren, Magersfontein, Jacobsdal, Jagersfontein and further in the Cape Colony under Gen Hertzog.
