Auctioneer's description

Boer War medal group to Irish Nurse Mary Talbot, who served with the Princess Christian’s Army Nursing Service Reserve. Queen’s South Africa Medal (1899) and King’s South Africa Medal (1902) both impressed named NURSING SISTER M. TALBOT.; Princess Christian’s Army Nursing Service Reserve Badge #206 to the back, of white metal scroll SOUTH AFRICA 1900-01 all mounted for display. They come with a copy of medal roll and newspaper articles including photograph of Sister Talbot. Sister Mary Talbot was born in Westmeath, Ireland, possibly about 1880. She trained as a nurse in the South Infirmary, Cork, the City of Dublin Hospital and the Cork Street Fever Hospital, Dublin. She was awarded the Medal of the Order of St. John for her service during the typhus epidemic on the island of Inniskea (or Iniskea) in 1895. On the outbreak of the Boer War, she was working in the City of Dublin Hospital and when the call for volunteers went out, the entire nursing staff volunteered. The selection process was quite arduous in that not only did the candidate have to be medically qualified, including working in the fever ward, but of impeccable social standing. She served at the No. 1 General Hospital, Wynberg, and possibly other locations. Sister Talbot survived the rigours of South Africa to return to Ireland post war. It is possible that she further served in WW1, however more research is required to establish.
