Hughes | George Arthur | | Lieutenant Colonel | HUGHES, GEORGE ARTHUR, Lieutenant Colonel, was born 18 May 1851, fifth son of James Hughes, of Curragh Priven, Rathcormac, County Cork. He was educated at Trinity College, Dublin (Bachelor of Arts; Bachelor of Medicine; Master of Surgery), and joined the RAMC 4 February 1877; served in the Afghan War, 1878-80 (Medal); in the Bechuanaland Expedition, 1884-85, and in the Ashanti Expedition, 1895-96 (Honourably mentioned; Star). He served in the Nile Expedition in 1898, and was present at the Battle of Khartoum; received the Egyptian Medal with clasp; was mentioned in Despatches [London Gazette, 30 September 1898], and created a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order [London Gazette, 15 November 1898]: "George Arthur Hughes, Lieutenant Colonel, Royal Army Medical Corps. In recognition of services during the recent operations in the Sudan". (The insignia, etc, were sent to the GOC, Malta, 21 December 1898, and presented by General Sir L Fremantle 15 February 1898). He became Colonel 25 March 1904, and retired 26 August 1905.
