Bell | Edward | | Captain | Edward Bell was born in Gibraltar 5 April, 1866, son of Major-General E W D Bell, VC, CB, Royal Welsh Fusiliers, a Hero of the Alma. He was educated privately in Germany, joined the Warwick Militia in 1884, and the Worcester Regiment in 1886. He served during the Boer War 1900, as Adjutant, CIV Mounted Infantry; took part in operations in Orange Free State, February to May 1900, including operations at Paardeberg, actions at Poplar Grove, Driefontein, and Karee Siding; operations in Transvaal, May and June 1900, including Johannesburg, Pretoria and Diamond Hill; operations in Orange River Colony, including actions at Wittebergen (Despatches, Brevet Lieutenant Colonel, Queen's medal with 6 clasps). Promoted Brevet Colonel in 1907 and was engaged in the Remount Service, August 1914 to November 1921, including DADR in Western Command 1919-21 (CMG).
