MarshallWilliam ThomasCaptain Born in 1854. He joined the 19th Hussars in 1873. Served for ten years in ranks; became Honourary Captain 20th January 1895. War service: Egyptian Expedition 1882-84 (medal with clasp j bronze star); Sudan, 1884; Battle of Teb and Tamaai (Despatches; 2 clasps; VC) Boer War 1899-1900. This dashing officer received the Victoria Cross for his conspicuous bravery during the cavalry charge at El-Teb in bringing Lieutenant Colonel P H S Barrow, 19th Hussars, out of action. That officer, having been severely wounded and his horse killed, was on the ground surrounded by the enemy, when Quartermaster-Sergeant W T Marshall, who stayed behind with him, seized his hand and dragged him through the enemy back to the regiment. Had Lieutenant Colonel Barrow been left behind he must have been killed. Served in the Boer War in 1899-1900, taking part in the defence of Ladysmith, and the action at Laing's Nek (medal and four clasps). In 1905 he was appointed Camp Quartermaster to the Aldershot Army Corps.19th (Queen Alexandra's Own Royal) Hussars
