Whitaker | Frederick Shewell | | Captain | He died June 24th, 1900, at Heidelberg, of wounds received in action the previous day. He had seen much service in South Africa previous to 1899, having been through the Galeka and Gaika Wars, the Bechuanaland Expedition and the Matabele Campaign. He offered his services at the outbreak of the war, and was first given command of a squadron In the South African Light Horse, and afterwards in Roberts' Horse. Captain Whitaker was a Fellow of the Royal Colonial Institute, and his name was inscribed on a memorial tablet in the hall of the building in Northumberland Avenue, London.
