HollandGerald EdwardFirst Grade OfficerHOLLAND, GERALD EDWARD, First Grade Officer, Royal Indian Marine, was born in Dublin in 1860; went to sea, 1876; entered Royal Indian Marine, 1880; served with the Burma Expeditionary Force, 1887-89, and in the Chin-Lushai Expedition, and for his services was created a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order [London Gazette, 14 November 1890]: “Gerald Edward Holland, First Grade Officer, Royal Indian Marine”.  His DSO was awarded “In recognition of services during  Chin-Lushai Expedition”.  He commanded the Warren Hastings when that ship was lost off Reunion Island in 1897; was court-martialled, and the result was a simple reprimand; received an exemplary order from the Governor of India for his fine conduct and saving of life.  Later he served on the Naval Transport Staff, Durban, and as Divisional Officer, 1900-1, being thrice mentioned in Despatches and receiving the CIE.  For three years he was principal Port Officer at Rangoon; retired from the RIM in 1905; held the post of Marine Superintendent (L & N W Railway and L & Y Railway), Fleetwood, in 1907, and from 1907 onwards held the post of Marine Superintendent, L & N W Ely, Holyhead.  In December 1914, shortly after the outbreak of the European War, became Lieutenant Colonel, RE, and Assistant Director of Inland Water Transport in France.  It was largely owing to his efforts that this corps was created.  Became Colonel and Deputy Director in 1915; became Director in 1916, and Brigadier General in 1917, but was head of the Department in France since its creation in 1914.  For his services he was three times mentioned in Despatches; received the CB and CMG; was decorated by the King of the Belgians with the Order of Leopold of Belgium, and also by the King of Italy with the Order of St Maurice and St Lazarus.  Died, whilst on sick leave, at St Leonards-on-Sea, 20 June 1917, from illness contracted on active service in France.

KendallC J CCommanderHe was born in 1864, son of Surgeon General H Kendall, AMD, and Annie, daughter of General Sir James Brind, GCB.  He was educated at Epsom, and entered the Royal Indian Marine in 1885; served in Burma, 1885-89 (Medal with two clasps); with the Marine Survey, India, 1889-97; in China, 1900 (Medal), and in Somaliland, 1904.  For his services in the last mentioned campaign he was created a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order [London Gazette, 6 September 1904]: "Charles James Cope Kendall, Commander, Royal Indian Marine.  In recognition of services during the operations in Somaliland".  Captain Kendall served in the European War.  He was appointed Junior Marine Transport Officer at Suez 22 August 1914, and held that post until transferred to Cairo, as Divisional Naval Transport Officer, 11 February 1918, reverting to the Royal Indian Marine 12 June 1919.  He was created a CIE in 1919, and was also given the 3rd Class Order of the Nile.  He married, at St Paul's, Knightsbridge, 26 June 1901, Lilian Mary (died 1909), youngest daughter of Reverend William Maule, of Eyensbury, St Neots, and had one son, Bryan Harold Maule, born 14 February 1906.

PiffardAlbert J GCommanderQSA (0). RIMS Canning. Albert Piffard was born in Calcutta, India, on 10 November 1861 and was Apprenticed to Messrs Thomas & James Harrison of Liverpool. He served at sea for two years and for a short time worked in a solicitor's office, and served on board Glenroy and Night Hawk for six months as an Ordinary Seaman. He joined the Indian Marine as a 4th Grade Officer on probation aboard the steamer Koel on 9 March 1880 and transferred to HUGH ROSE two weeks later. He was confirmed as a 4th Grade Officer whilst aboard Koel on 26 November 1880 before joining Dagma in December 1880, and Amberwitch in November 1881. Service aboard the latter ship in Egyptian waters earned him the dated Egypt medal and the Khedive's Star. He served next aboard Tenasserim (September 1882) and Czarewitch (April 1883). Having passed the Board of Trade Examination for 2nd Mate on 12 July 1883, he was promoted to 3rd Grade Officer on 12 August 1883, and unusually was immediately promoted to 2nd Grade Officer with the same seniority on joining Amberwitch in August 1883. He subsequently served in this rank aboard CANNING (April 1885), Sir William Peel (October 1885), CANNING (August 1887) and Irrawaddy (August 1887) during which period he served in support of military operations during the Burma War.
Promoted to 1st Grade Officer on 1 January 1888, he next served in this rank aboard Sladen (April 1889), Enterprise (April 1889), Nancowry, in Command (August 1890), Dalhousie (September 1890), and Irrawaddy as Lieutenant In Command (October 1890). He reverted to the rank of Lieutenant on joining Warren Hastings (November 1894), LAWRENCE, in Command (October 1895), and Elphinstone, in Command (December 1896). He was promoted to 3rd Grade Commander on 8 March 1897 and subsequently served in this rank aboard Minto (August 1897), Dalhousie (November 1897), Minto (December 1897), and Canning (March 1899). In this latter vessel he served firstly in South African waters and secondly in Chinese waters thereby gaining another two campaign medals. He reverted to 3rd Grade Commander on joining Dalhousie in November 1900 and continued to serve in this rank on joining Hardinge (May 1901), Clive (September 1901), and Hardinge (March 1903).
He served in Hardinge in Somali waters in support of the military operations in East Africa and was promoted to 2nd Grade Commander on 14 September 1903. In October 1904 he was posted to England for duty with the building of the RIMS Dufferin which he was to Command. This was his last seagoing appointment prior to retiring on 13 July 1907, having served in the Royal Indian Marine for 27 years.
