MILTONDUFF VOLUNTEERS ENTERTAINED.

On Thursday evening Privates James RUSSELL, Wm. REID, Robert INNES, and D. ROBERTSON [sic], members of L Company (Alves), who have returned from South Africa with the Seaforth Service Company, were entertained to a cake and wine banquet in the schoolroom, Miltonbrae [Milton Brae]. Accompanying the guests was a large attendance of past and present members of the Alves Company and their lady friends. The chair was occupied by Capt. A.Y. Cook.

A short toast-list was proceeded with, the loyal and patriotic sentiments being given in appropriate terms from the chair.

Chaplain W. Hamilton, Alves, proposed the toast of the Guests. In his remarks, he spoke in favourable terms of the gallantry of the men in going to South Africa, and also the satisfaction of the district and the members of Alves Volunteer Company at seeing them safely home.

Private J. INNES replied.

Among the other toasts were Other Companies of the Battalion, proposed by Sergt.-Instructor Cunningham; L Company, proposed by Mr Scott, Miltonbrae; and the Ladies, proposed by Lance-Corporal Cheyne.

There was a large and social gathering at the dance which followed. The music was supplied by Messrs Mackenzie on the violin and Miss Tulloch, Batchen, piano.

At the close, a hearty vote of thanks was accorded the committee, which consisted of the non-commissioned officers of the company.

It is expected that the four volunteers will be presented later on with gold medals, which function will take the form of a public entertainment.

ENTERTAINMENT TO L COMPANY (ALVES) RETURNED VOLUNTEERS.

On Thursday evening last the members of L Company returned from the front were entertained to a cake and wine banquet in Miltonbrae School. The four members of the Company – Private Robert INNES, Private James RUSSELL, Private Wm. REID, and Private Donald ROSS – all wore their khaki uniform. There were also present a few of the returned service Company from Elgin, including Lance-Corpl. J. SCOTT, Privates H. SHEWAN, J. LOGIE, and J. SUTHERLAND. Captain A.Y. Cook presided. The Rev. W. Hamilton, chaplain to the Company, was also present. After the loyal toasts had been appropriately given from the chair, Rev. Wm. Hamilton proposed the guests of the evening, thanking them for honouring the Company by giving their service and for the manner in which they had conducted themselves. Private Robert INNES made a suitable acknowledgment. Rev. Wm. Scott, M.A., proposed the Imperial Forces and in doing so referred with pride to the place occupied by the volunteers at home and in the colonies and to the aid they had rendered to the mother country in the time of need. The entertainment was wound up by a dance. The four service volunteers are to be presented with gold medals later.
