WON AT THE WAR.

On Friday evening, the 12th inst., a number of ladies and gentlemen assembled at the Commercial Hotel to witness the presentation of a handsome gold medal to Mr Dan MURPHY, in recognition of his services in South Africa. The medal was in the shape of a Maltese cross, surmounted by the British lion. On one side was the recipient’s monogram and on the other was engraved the following inscription – “Presented by the public of Balranald to Corporal D. Murphy, Imperial Yeomanry Scouts, upon his return from the South African war, December 1900”. The presentation was made by the Mayor, Mr W.O. Close, who stated briefly that they had met to redeem the promise made at the public welcome accorded Mr MURPHY last December. He wished “Dan” every happiness and prosperity and asked those assembled to drink his health.

The toast was drunk with enthusiasm and was briefly responded to by Mr MURPHY.

The health of Mrs C.E. Murphy was afterwards heartily received.
