BURNT CREEK.

On Friday evening, December 21st, a social was given in the Public Hall in honor of Pts. KNOTT and BREEN, returned soldiers. The meeting, which was one of the largest and most enthusiastic ever held here, included a large number of visitors from Longwood and Avenel presided over by Cr. Z. Akers. The platform was occupied by several mounted riflemen, comrades of the guests of the evening, in uniform. Proceedings were opened by Miss Oxley playing “Home Sweet Home” as the guests marched into the Hall. Mr G. Akers welcomed the returned troopers on behalf of the residents, followed by Corporal Cummins in an able and manly speech on behalf of the Longwood M.R. and Pte. Fletcher for Avenel M.R. Cr. Brodie, Shire President, and Mr H. Tubb, of Longwood, also spoke in welcome, after which the Chairman, with a few well chosen remarks, presented Privates KNOTT and BREEN with a gold medal each, subscribed by the residents as a token of their appreciation of the services rendered by the recipients in South Africa. Pte. BREEN responded in a short neat speech. Owing to an affection of the throat, Pte. KNOTT, who has not yet recovered from his illness for which he was invalided home, was unable to reply, Corporal Spencer responding on his behalf. Refreshments were handed around and thoroughly enjoyed by the company, when a good programme of songs and recitations was rendered by local talent and visitors from Avenel and Longwood, a very enjoyable evening being brought to a close by the audience singing the National Anthem.

Great credit is due to the ladies for the tasteful manner in which the hall was decorated with flags, flowers and greenery.

BURNT CREEK.

A [illegible] was given to Privates R. JEFFREY (of Burnt Creek) and J. GRANT and F. TUBB (of Longwood) on Friday last. The returned soldiers, who have been absent sixteen months, were led to the stage amid the cheers of a large audience while Miss Quinane played “Home sweet Home”. Cr. Akers occupied the chair. The Guests were heartily welcomed in speeches by Messrs G. Akers, J. Brock, and Cr. Brodie. The Chairman, on behalf of the residents of Burnt Creek, presented Pte. JEFFREY with a suitably inscribed gold medal in recognition of his services in South Africa, and warmly welcomed the three soldiers home again, expressing deep regret at the news that Pte. LEWIS, the sole remaining soldier from the Creek, had been severely wounded in the hand. Pte. JEFFREY responded feelingly, thanking the audience for their kind welcome. Songs were contributed by Miss Schwab and Messrs Field, Crawford and McBrierty. Refreshments were handed round during an interval in the proceedings. A dance was afterwards held, and kept up till morning. The stall was tastefully decorated by the ladies for the occasion.
