TOWN GIFTS TO ACTIVE SERVICE MEN.
The members of C and D Companies of the 1st Gloucestershire Royal Engineer Volunteers dined together at the Drill Hall, Swindon Road, on Wednesday evening, and advantage was taken of the occasion to distribute among the active service men of the corps the gifts which had been subscribed by the townspeople in recognition of the patriotic manner in which these men had come forward at the time of their country’s need. …….

The EX-MAYOR then called the men forward and presented each with a framed and illuminated copy of the Resolution of the Town Council (thanking them for their gallant and patriotic services and congratulating them on their safe return), and also handed each a gift in the shape of either a silver cup, a silver watch, a silver tobacco box, or other similar article of is own choice. The recipients (who needless to say, were warmly greeted by their comrades) were – Corpl. A. DODWELL (now Sergeant), pendant; Second-Corpl. GRIEVE (now Sergeant), silver cup; Sapper BULL (now Corpl.), pendant; Sapper J. COOMBES (now 2nd-Corpl.), watch; Sapper H. FARMER (now Lance-Corpl.), watch; Sapper H. HARRIS (now 2nd-Corpl.), cigarette case; Saper J.R. KARN (now Lance-Corpl.), cup; Sapper F. LAWRENCE (now Lance-Corpl.), watch; Sapper A. MEULBROUCK (now 2nd-Corpl.), watch; Sapper H.J. ROCK (now Lance-Corpl.), watch; Sapper F. RYDER (now Lance-Corpl.), cigarette case; Sapper A. ROBERTS (now Lance-Corpl.), watch and chain; Sapper J. SALLIS (now Lance-Corpl.), watch; Sapper H. SUCH (now Lance-Corpl.), watch. Sergt.-Major Brown received the gifts on behalf of Sappers LAWRENCE, SALLIS, and ROCK, who were unavoidably absent, and it was announced by the Chairman that a silver watch or some other gift would be presented to the late Sergt. BROWNING’s little boy.
