CLIFTON.
A very successful social took place here on 29th Aug. to welcome home troopers D. MAFFIN and W. ARCHER of the 9th Contingent. The hall was crowded with their friends, and everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Mr Pollard, the chairman, welcomed ‘our boys’ home in a capital speech, and on behalf of the residents presented each of them with a handsome gold medal, suitably inscribed, together with a nice pair of sleeve links. A word of praise is due to the Misses Peace, Teviotdale, and Corbin for the energetic way in which they canvassed the district to make the social a success. Mr J. Cook (violin) and Miss Couling (piano) discoursed sweet music till the small hours of the morning, and Mr W. Peace was quite at home as M.C.
