CASTLE CAEREINION.

RETURN OF CORPORAL J. HOLLOWAY.

On Friday evening week a meeting was held in the Clubroom of the Red Lion Hotel, for parishioners and friends to give expression of their congratulations upon the recent return home of Corporal Herbert John HOLLOWAY from South Africa. The meeting was presided over by Mr E.E. Jones, who gave a hearty address of welcome and congratulations at the opening of the proceedings, and then called upon Sergeant-Major Jestico to present him with a semi hunter silver watch with gold hindges and key knob, and massive silver chain and gold medal. The following inscription was engraved inside the case of the watch: – “Presented to Corporal Holloway by parishioners and friends upon his return from voluntary service in South Africa, April 1901”. His initials were also engraved upon the medal. Sergeant-Major Jestico on behalf of the committee and subscribers then made the presentation, and spoke in high terms of the readiness with which Corporal Holloway obeyed the call to arms. The Chairman then called upon the Treasurer of the Committee, Mr Walter Colley, to present the Hero of the evening with a purse of gold. The Corporal in responding to what had been said and done for him by the many kind friends was under considerable emotion. He thanked all friends for the very great kindness shown to him and said that he would never forget the people of Castle Caereinion wherever he went. A pleasant evening was spent in singing and addresses by members of the committee, Sergeant-Major Jestico, Mr W. Astley, and Mr Tom Roberts, Llanfair; Mr Percy Holloway, Corporal Holloway, Mr Holloway, senior, Mr D. Richard, Mr D. Edwards, and Mr Giles (Welshpool) favoured the meeting with songs and duets.

Mr Holloway, senior, spoke in terms of thanks to the committee and subscribers for the very kind manner in which they had all recognised his son and the kindness that had always been shown to them as a family by the Castle Caereinion friends; he felt that evening that it had become closer than ever. Mr Holloway thanked Mr Giles, who supplied the watch, etc., for coming to the meeting.

A vote of thanks was accorded to Sergeant-Major Jestico for the tone and spirit his presence had given to the meeting.

Mr and Mrs Adams were thanked for the use of the room, which was artistically decorated with Union Jacks and bannerettes, that evening and for committee meetings.

Votes of thanks to the Chairman, who also acted as secretary, and to Mr Colley, the treasurer, were given.
