Dalbeattie.

The men of H Company Galloway Rifles arrived at Dalbeattie, and were accorded a great reception. They were met at the station by the Provost and Magistrates and the Volunteer Company. A banquet was held in the Town Hall in the evening, at which there was a tremendous crush. Mr Maxwell, M.P., gave the toast of “The Imperial Forces”, and spoke at length of the war in South Africa, eulogising the work done by the citizen soldiers. During the evening the Provost presented six Volunteers with gold maltese badges.

On Wednesday evening there was a good gathering of Dalbeattie folks in the Crown Hotel, Dalbeattie, to do honour to soldiers who had gone through a part of the campaign in South Africa – viz., Private J. McMILLAN, Scots Fusiliers; Private FORREST, K.O.S.B., Reservist; and Trooper L.R. SOWERBY, Ayrshire Yeomanry. Mr J.A. Callan presided. The usual loyal and patriotic toasts were submitted from the chair, and heartily responded to. Colour-Sergeant Gallagher submitted the toast of the evening, “Our Guests”, and thanked the company for the honour they had conferred upon him of proposing the toast of his brothers in arms. He then presented each soldier with a gold badge in the form of a Maltese cross. Sergeant Mundell proposed the toast of the “Waiting Men in the Active Service Contingent”, to which Private H. Kerr replied. Other toasts and songs followed.
