RETURNED WARRIORS.

WELCOME TO PRIVATE T. DEARDEN.

The members of the Austral Club rose to the occasion, when one of their number, Private T. DEARDEN, was selected a member of the Fifth Contingent, when, as a send-off, they tendered him a complimentary smoke-night, and presented him with a valuable pair of field glasses, and now that he has returned safe and sound they have again shown their pride and satisfaction. The "Welcome Home" took place at the Royal Hall on Wednesday evening, when there was a large and enthusiastic gathering.

The chair was occupied by Commissioner J. Stewart, who, in a eulogistic speech, proposed "'Our Guest", Private DEARDEN and some of his returned comrades responding.

The toast of the "Austral Club" was proposed by the Mayor (Cr. McDonald), and acknowledged by the secretary, Mr Henry Punshon.

The president, Mr. J. Cheese, on behalf of the Club, presented Private DEARDEN with a handsome gold locket, and on behalf of Mr Ben. White, with a silver-mounted pipe. The president also presented Farrier J. ARNOLD, of the Bushveldt Carbineers, with a silver-mounted pipe, on behalf of the recipient's comrades.. The following contributed to the musical portion of the proceedings, Mr A. Heither presiding at the piano: – Messrs. D. Sleap, E. O'Rourke, M. McCleish, A. Simmonds, H. Williamson, A. Mitchell, B. McAthur, C. Westbrook, J. Stapleton, and Private [illegible].
