GARMOUTH HONOURS RETURNED VOLUNTEERS.

Presentation and Concert.

The Free Church Hall, Garmouth, was crowded with an enthusiastic audience on Thursday evening, when the men belonging to I (Garmouth) Company, who saw service in South Africa with the Seaforth Volunteer Service Company, were presented with gifts as an appreciation of the gallantry of these young men.

The Volunteer Company paraded in review order, and there was a large muster of all ranks. Preceded b by the company’s piper and the guests in khaki, the volunteers marched to the hall, and on entering, were accorded a hearty welcome. The volunteer officers present were – Major Smith, Kingston; Captain Murdoch, Garmouth; Captain J.R. Stewart, Elgin; and Lieutenant Spence, Elgin. Major Grant, Dellachaple, who appeared in the uniform of a Lancashire Regiment, presided, and made the presentation.

The names of the khaki volunteers are Private James MURDOCH, Private Geo. STEPHEN, and Private Colin GRIEVE.

It may here be mentioned that Private MURDOCH was presented with a gold medal, silver-mounted black ebony walking stick, and silver albert chain, the other two volunteers receiving on this occasion the silver albert, having been presented by the inhabitants of Bogmoor district with a medal and walking stick. The medal is of the same pattern as supplied to the Elgin lads, the only difference being that the Elgin coat of arms is supplanted by the recipient’s monogram. On the reverse is the following inscription – “Presented to Private James Murdoch by the Garmouth community for patriotic services in Boer war 1900-1901”. The walking stick is similarly inscribed, and states that a gold medal was also presented.
