HONOURING THE VOLUNTEERS.

Private Arthur HOLMES, one of the selected men, was entertained by his fellow-workers in Messrs Rankin & Blackmore’s engineering establishment last night, when a large number of the employees met in Yielder’s café. Mr Gwynne presided. After tea, a number of toasts were proposed. In the course of a few remarks, the Chairman made suitable reference to the departure of Mr HOLMES, who had, he said, valiantly come forward at the present stage of the nation’s history and offered to assist in fighting its battles in a foreign land. They all held Mr HOLMES in the highest esteem, and were justly proud of him. His church connections, his own private friends, and now his shop-mates had each in their turn presented him with tangible tokens of their respect as well as wished him God-speed. The Chairman added that he had no doubt that the little band of Volunteers who went out to South Africa from Greenock would prove themselves Scotsmen up to the hilt. Mr Richard Macfarlane then, in name of the company, presented Mr HOLMES with a gold albert and appendage, suitably inscribed. Mr HOLMES, in his reply, referred to the many happy connections he had in his former workshop. During the evening a number of songs, etc., were contributed, a pleasant gathering being concluded with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne”.
