We had a red-letter day in the Green Valley Schoolhouse on Saturday last (writes a correspondent), in making a presentation to the BAYLY brothers on the eve of their leaving as volunteers for South Africa — Henry in the fourth contingent, and Frederick in the fifth. The schoolhouse was tastefully decorated. Abundant eatables were provided by the ladies of the district. Mr P. McLeod occupied the chair, and Mr James Morrison made the presentation in a neat, happy speech, suitable to the occasion. The presents are costly and useful, and when I mention that they were selected by Mr Scobie Mackenzie, who kindly undertook this part, you may depend the choice is good. Those to Henry are an aluminium field glass, a gold locket with a diamond centre, and a gold chain, and that to Frederick a watch chain, and greenstone pendant, both suitably inscribed. Songs and recitations contributed to enliven the gathering till the clock indicated the near approach of Sunday, when the gathering broke up after singing "Rule Britannia", "God Save the Queen", and "Auld lang syne". There is something specially interesting about these young fellows by their being the grandsons of a distinguished officer of the Imperial Army of no less a regiment than the redoubtable Gordons, so much in evidence at the present time.

Otago Witness, 6th March 1901

The 23rd ult. was a red-letter day in the Green Valley district, when a presentation was made to Trooper Robert McGREGOR, of the seventh contingent, on the eve of his leaving for the Cape, and also one arranged to be sent to Trooper John MILLER, of the sixth contingent (now far on his way to South Africa). Although there was only a short afternoon to get round the district, a large sum was subscribed, and there was a fine gathering at the school at night. At the meeting, a chairman being chosen, after due deliberation it was resolved to get a good field glass, suitably inscribed, for each of the troopers, and spend the remaining funds in a gold locket for each, the selection being left to Mr Scobie Mackenzie, who a year ago kindly acted in getting presents for the two young men who left for the war last year. After singing some patriotic songs and wishing Trooper McGREGOR a safe voyage and a safe return, the very pleasant meeting broke up with the singing of "Auld lang syne" and "God save the King". There are now one man from Green Valley in each of the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh contingents. Much credit is due to Messrs G. Morrison and J. Bayly for the smart way they went round this scattered district with the subscription lists, when they had only a few hours to arrange matters.
