GRASMERE.
On Saturday evening the returned active service volunteer, Private A. WILSON, received his “official” welcome. A procession was formed at the Rothay Hotel, and led by the band with the martial strains of the “Red, white and blue” marched to the school field, where Mrs Danson in a few appropriate words presented WILSON with a silver English lever watch and a gold chain and pendant, along with a sum of £13. Both watch and chain were suitably inscribed. In returning thanks, WILSON said he was proud to have been their representative, and he thanked them both for their kind present and the manner in which they had welcomed him back. Mr Graham proposed a vote of thanks to Mrs Danson for her kindness in making the presentation, and passed a warm eulogium upon WILSON for having given his services to his country. Mr Baldry took the opportunity of making an appeal to all eligible young men to join the volunteer company and bring it back to its former strength. Cheers were then given for Mrs Danson, the King and the returned volunteer. Mr Danson replied on behalf of his wife to the vote of thanks, and also presented WILSON with half-a-pound of tobacco and a briar pipe in case. A few of the Ambleside Active Service men were present at the ceremony. The Grasmere inhabitants had subscribed most liberally to the fund, and Sergt. C. Fuller had worked most energetically in getting in the money.
