Gunning News.

On Friday last Gunner Joseph HINDS of " A" Battery, who has been on active service in South Africa for over 18 months was tendered a complimentary social and presented with a gold pendant, as a mark of appreciation of his services rendered in South Africa. The hon. secretaries (Miss A.M. Lawliss and Miss B. Murray), are responsible for the success of the affair and are to be congratulated for the untiring energy they displayed to make the evening a success. About 30 couples assembled in the Temperance Hall, and dancing was kept up with great vim until the wee hours. Immediately after supper Mr A.E. Grosvenor, on behalf of his well-wishers made the presentation to Gunner HINDS. In the course of his remarks concerning Gunner HINDS' connection with active service, the speaker said they remembered the demonstration which took place in Gunning in celebrating the relief of Ladysmith, and they would remember the wonderfully patriotic speeches delivered on that occasion and the wild enthusiasm displayed by some of those who vied with each other in being the "Major General" of the demonstration. Well, fortunately, our soldiers were neither goaded on to war by such men in the first place, nor was their ardour and love to do their duty damped in the second place; but it appeared to him (the speaker) a remarkable fact that the very men who a year ago were so brimful of patriotism, when an opportunity arose to memorialise a fallen soldier and to do honour to ode who had done his duty, these magnetic patriots were conspicuous by their assistance directly and otherwise! The large gathering of sympathisers who assembled and assisted in the Park the other day to unveil the Murray Memorial proved their sincerity, and the gathering that evening in like manner wished to show Gunner HINDS that his Gunning friends were genuine and appreciated him, together with every other Australian who had assisted so nobly in the South African contingents. Trooper HINDS briefly replied and gave some interesting accounts of his movements when in South Africa. The pendant was of neat design and inscribed as follows: "Presented to Gunner Joseph Hinds by his Gunning friends as a mark of appreciation and for services rendered in South Africa".
