PRESENTATION TO RETURNED VOLUNTEERS.

On Monday night, a large and enthusiastic company met in the Assembly Rooms of the East End Hotel, Chillingham Road, Newcastle, to make presents, on behalf of the inhabitants of Heaton, to Corporal F. DARRELL, Privates J. ROBSON and G. KING, of the Volunteer Service Company of the Fighting Fifth, and to Driver Hunter ROBSON, of the Elswick Battery. Mr John Flynn occupied the chair.

Letters of apology were received from Mr W.R. Plummer, M.P., Councillor T. Cairns, and Councillor F. Elliott, who, owing to their efforts on behalf of the fund for the sufferers in the Cobra disaster, were engaged at the concert held at the Olympia.

The Chairman paid a high tribute to the patriotism of the volunteers, and in presenting them with a handsome gold medallion, suitably inscribed, he congratulated them on the service they had rendered to the country and on their safe return.

Regret was expressed that, owing to illness, Private J. ROBSON was prevented from attending.

Councillor A. Scott and Mr W.F. Phillips also delivered addresses.

During the evening, Messrs Hugh Lindsay, J.W. Johnson, Harland, F. Dyson, Smith, Moffitt, E. Warren, H. Raeburn, and others contributed to the harmony of the gathering.
