DINNER TO HUCKNALL YEOMEN.

On Wednesday night a “welcome” dinner was held at the Portland Arms Inn, Hucknall Torkard, for Troopers J. HAYWOOD and A. KIRK, who recently returned from active service in South Africa, for which they volunteered. There was a very large company, and a very substantial repast was placed upon the tables, Mr W. Hayward (landlord) and Mr T. Mills providing the feast.

On the cloths being removed, Councillor J. Orange was called to the chair, and Mr W. Houldsworth to the vice-chair. Amongst those present were: Sergeant-Major Thompson, Sergeants Gothorpe, Snowden, Bamford, Troopers Lilley, H. Shaw, W. Goodson, A. KIRK, J. HAYWARD (South Notts. Hussars), Privates C. Stacey, S. Hough, Parfrement (Derbyshires), Rutt (Mounted Infantry), Messrs G. Cartledge, G.R. Bamkin, and others.

A toast list was prepared and gone through, and in the course of the evening presentations were made to Troopers HAYWARD and KIRK, consisting of gold medals, both of which were identical except in the name. On one side was the crest of the South Notts. Hussars, and on the other the following inscription: “Presented to ________ on return from active service in South Africa, by his Hucknall comrades of the B Squadron, July 10th, 1901”.

The gifts were handed to the yeomen by Trooper Goodson in a very able speech, in which he explained the methods of the campaign. There had been great difficulties, but they had been borne manfully and Troopers HAYWARD and KIRK had been true “comrades in arms”.

Brief and suitable replies were given, and towards the close the healths of the donors of the dinner were drunk, and responded to. Thanks were also accorded the chairman.

Songs were rendered by Messrs F. Eagle, G.M. Robinson, R. Humphreys, Keys, and Gothorpe.
