THE KING AND THE MAYOR OF KIMBERLEY.

The King yesterday received the Mayor of Kimberley, and accepted as a memento of the siege a model of the “Long Cecil” gun made entirely out of ammunition used by the Boer besiegers. The body of the weapon appears to have been constructed from a shell case, cartridge cases form the spokes of the wheels, and use is found for a number of Mauser bullets. Affixed to the stand on which the gun is mounted is a metal map of Africa, and the whole is encircled by a copper wire cable. The Mayor also submitted to the King’s inspection a silver box, presented to him by the townspeople in recognition of his services during the siege, and the gold replica of the medal struck to commemorate the relief of the town. Into the lid of the box a complete cover of one of the late Queen’s chocolate boxes has been inserted.
