LANCEFIELD.

A large representative gathering took place on Tuesday night, at the Macedonia Hotel, under the chairmanship of the president of the Lancefield Shire (Councillor A. Hunt), to do honour to Private Sydney JOHNSTON, of the Bushmen's contingent, returned from the South African war. Private JOHNSTON's health was drunk with intense enthusiasm, and he was also presented with a handsome gold medal, bearing the following inscription: – "Presented by the Residents of the Lancefield District to Private Sydney Johnston, Bushmen's Contingent, South African War, 1900-1901. A Gallant Australian". During the evening patriotic speeches were given, and mention was made that the Government will be expected to deal generously with the returned soldiers, who have won fame and honour for Australia, and that the experience gained by these men should be secured for defence purposes.
