A largely-attended smoking-concert was held at the Llwynypia and Tonypandy Conservative Club on Monday evening , the principal events being the presentation of gold medals to the five Reservists who have returned from South Africa, after being there nearly three years, and also a telescope to Mr Walter Dando, who is leaving for New Zealand. Councillor Robert Hughes and Mr R. Bridcut were present.

The Chairman (Mr Barry) in addressing the meeting stated that he was very pleased to see so many there, who had come to show their appreciation of their noble Reservists.

Mr R. Bridcut was then called upon to address the meeting. He referred to the splendid example the club and its members had shown all institutions throughout the country, and gave a full account of the fund started in the club for the Reservists’ wives and families. From the commencement of the war until the return of all those members a sum of £140 had been paid out to support the wives and children of those members, and there was still a balance in hand, which had been used for the purchase of gold medals, which were to be presented that evening, and he also remarked on the generosity of Councillor R. Hughes, who subscribed £5 towards the medals.

Councillor R. Hughes made the presentation.

The following resolution was then put to the meeting: – “That the members of the Llwynypia and Tonypandy Conservative Club beg to impress upon the Government the national importance of using their influence to secure for the Reservists and other portions of the British Army such permanent employment as may suggest itself to them, and that a copy of the resolution be sent to the Prime Minister, the Colonial Secretary, and the Secretary for War”. It was carried unanimously.

Councillor Hughes then called upon the following Reservists – Gunner J.W. DAVIES, Royal Field Artillery; Private J. MACDONALD, Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry; Private R. DANIEL, 1st Welsh Regiment; Private James RAIKES, 1st Welsh Regiment; and Private J. JENKINS, 2nd Guards – and presented each with a gold medal.
