LAUDER.

PRESENTATION TO A SHARPSHOOTER.

On Saturday night, Corporal HENDERSON, of the Lauder Volunteers, who is a member of the sharpshooting corps raised in Edinburgh, and who is about to proceed to South Africa, was presented by Captain Rankin, in name of the Lauder Volunteers and friends, with a gold watch, chain, and pendant. The Captain paid a high compliment to Corporal HENDERSON for his attendance and efficiency in everything pertaining to Volunteering. Corporal HENDERSON suitably replied. On the Sunday night previous, Corporal HENDERSON, who has been a member of Mr Martin’s Bible Class for many years, was in his accustomed place, when Mr Martin took the opportunity of wishing him, in name of the Bible Class and himself, God-speed on his journey and a safe return. Mr Martin also mentioned that other members of the class were at the front, namely Corporal STEWART of the Scots Greys; Corporal HENDERSON of the H.L.I., younger brother of Corporal HENDERSON; and Corporal DELAHUNT, of the K.O.S.B., who was a member of the Literary branch of the Young Men’s Guild.

PRESENTATION AT LAUDER.

The Lauderdale Volunteers and friends met in the Hall, on Friday, for the purpose of recognising the services of Lance-Corpls. BRUCE and KIDD, who recently returned from South Africa, where they had been serving with the 2nd Service Company of the Borderers. Captain McDougal presided, supported by the Rev. T. Martin (Chaplain), Lieut. Mackay, Provost Moore, and Baillie Lindsay. Colonel Money, C.B., A.D.C., of Allanbank, wrote regretting he could not be present owing to a prior engagement. The ladies and gentlemen turned out in force, and the Volunteers mustered very strong in uniform. Captain McDougal, on rising, was received with cheers. He thanked the people of the town and district for the great support they had given the Volunteers on all and every occasion no matter what the circumstances were, and he was pleased to take this opportunity of thanking them for their many kindnesses to the Company. (Applause). The Captain said – I am sure we are all very pleased to welcome home again Lance-Corpls. BRUCE and KIDD, after their arduous and trying times in the South African Campaign, and commended them very highly on their patriotic spirit in volunteering for active service. (Applause). The Captain then presented Lance-Corpls. BRUCE and KIDD each with a handsome gold watch and chain and pendant, and wished them long life and happiness to wear them – (applause) – and pointed out they would be able to show hereafter how their pluck and patriotism had been rewarded by their comrades and fellow-townsmen. (Loud applause). Lance-Corpl. BRUCE, on behalf of Pte. KIDD and himself, in a few well-chosen words, thanked the community for their very handsome gifts, and added any little service they had rendered was only their duty and they were ever ready to do that. (Applause). Pte. KIDD gave a resume of their journey to Africa, their marches and operations on the Veldt. He also gave a vivid description of the action at Vlakfontein. After the presentation, the ladies retired, and a smoking concert took place.
