GRATIFYING PRESENTATION TO A RESERVIST.

At the Crown Inn, Welton, on Monday evening, Major Pollard, 1st Volunteer Battalion P.A.S.L.I., made a presentation to Private Henry SAVAGE, 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards, who has been invalided home from South Africa, through injuries sustained at the Modder River. Major Pollard, in an appropriate speech, expressed his opinion that the local men at the front had done their duty well, and considering the number of them the casualties had been very few indeed. Private SAVAGE suitably acknowledged the gift, and he said he hoped that similar kindness as had been shown to him would be meted out to other local men on their return. The present consisted of a massive silver watch, chain and pendant. On the inside case of the watch was engraved, “Presented to Private H. Savage, 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards, May 28th, 1900”. The pendant was of chaste design, and bore the inscription, “Presented to Private Henry Savage, May 28th, 1900, by his friends in honour of his being present with Lord Methuen at Belmont, Graspan and Modder River engagements”. A smoking concert followed the presentation. It may be mentioned that Private SAVAGE was the first local man invalided home, having received three wounds. One bullet passed through the upper part of the left leg, one struck him in the buttock, travelled upwards and is now lodged in his side; another struck him in the calf of the leg, making only a flesh wound.
