WELCOME TO A RETURNED SOLDIER.

An enjoyable welcome home social and banquet was tendered at the residence of Mr Mann, Modewarre, on Tuesday last, to Trooper J.F. FARRER, of Buckley’s Road, who recently returned from South Africa. There was a large gathering of district friends, and Mr Thomas Mann presided. The gathering appropriately commenced the social with the singing of “Home Sweet Home”, and the programme afterwards provided was contributed to by Mrs Youlden, Misses Noble, Mann, Divon, Hammond, Hunt and Farrer, and Messrs C. Mann, F. Wray, Turner, E. Stevenson, H. and W. Gent, J. Mathieson, A. McIntyre, J. Loughran, J. Prowse, and G. Lawrence. Supper was afterwards partaken of in a large marquee, and full justice was done to the choice eatables provided by ladies of the district. A lengthy toast list was honored, the toast of the evening, “Our Guest”, being proposed by Mr J.C. Noble. Trooper FARRER suitably responded, and gave a brief account of his experience in South Africa. The chairman, Mr Mann, on behalf of the residents of Modewarre, presented Trooper FARRER with a gold medal, suitably inscribed. Dancing was afterwards indulged in until the early hours of Wednesday morning.
