WELCOME AT MAHENO.

The members of the Maheno dancing class held a pleasant little social among themselves on Friday evening, and at the same time gave a welcome to two of those who volunteered for service in South Africa, and who have returned home lately. After a few dances Mr James Clark mounted the platform, accompanied by Sergeant IKIN, one of the returned contingenters in question, and their appearance was greeted with a tumult of applause. The Chairman pleasantly and heartily welcomed back Sergeants IKIN and BARRACLOUGH, the latter of whom, he was sorry to say, bad been detained in Wellington. He then called on Mr P. Townsley, who, on behalf of the members of the class, and of the district, welcomed the two soldiers back, He remarked on the splendid work done by the colonials in South Africa, and said that Maheno was proud of the two men they were greeting that evening. The circumstance of having only sent two men with the earlier contingents, who had now both returned as sergeants, was unique, and proved that they must have conducted themselves in a manner creditable to themselves and their friends. He had the pleasant duty to perforin of welcoming both back, and also of presenting each with a gold Maltese cross as a mark of the esteem in which their actions were held. Sergeant IKEN acknowledged the gifts in appropriate terms, and Mr G. Barraclough did the same on behalf of his absent brother. The ladies at this point served supper in a most appetising manner. After that dancing was renewed, and kept up till an early hour. It may be mentioned that Maheno still has two representatives in South Africa, Troopers McLENNAN (2), and they may be confident of a hearty welcome when they return.
