Welcome Home to Soldiers.
On Friday evening the Maclean Company of Scottish Rifles tendered a smoke concert to Troopers J. GARVEN and R. CAMERON, to welcome them back from South Africa. There was an attendance of about 80 persons. Captain Mackay presided. The returned troopers wore presented with addresses of welcome, and tokens. Trooper CAMERON was presented with a gold locket, and Trooper GARVEN with a pair of gold sleeve links and a match box, which it had been intended to present to him before his departure for the front. In replying to the toast of his health, Trooper CAMERON denied the allegations that had recently been made against the British soldiers in South Africa. There was no opportunity given, he said, for soldiers to behave as it had been alleged they did. During the evening songs were given by Messrs D. McPhee, McDonald, P. O'Shea, W. Robinson, Phillips, and H. Renwick, the latter also accompanying the other singers on the piano. Mr C.J. Clarke gave a recitation and Mr M. Ryan danced a hornpipe. The pipers of the Scottish Rifles were also present and contributed several musical items. The toasts were as follows: —'The King', by Lieut. Lobban; 'Our Guests', by Captain Mackay, Troopers CAMERON and GARVEN responding; 'The Army and Navy', by Mr Phillips, supported by Mr D. See and responded to by Staff-Color-Sergt. Chedgey; 'Our absent comrades', by Lieut. Cameron; Troopers CAMERON and GARVEN responding.
