TYNEMOUTH CIVILIAN RIFLE CLUB.

HONOURING THE BRAVE.

The members of the Tynemouth Civilian Rifle Club and their friends mustered in strong force last night at the Morris Tube Range, Bedford Street, North Shields, for the purpose of honouring the local volunteers recently returned from South Africa, and the gathering, which took the form of a smoking concert, proved a great success. The Tynemouth C.R.C. must be given the credit of being the first to publicly recognise in the town the valuable work of our local volunteers. In the absence of the Mayor, Coun. Murray presided, but he afterwards vacated the chair in favour of the Deputy-Mayor (Coun. J. Eskdale). Amongst those present were Coun. W. Dodds (sec. of the club), Capt. Baynham, Messrs T.F. Manson, D.N. Stobbs, G.H. Heslop, J.T. Heslop, J. Crawford, T.T. Bains, of South Shields, J. Smart, J.V. Wedderburn (secretary of the Whitely C.R.C.), C. Park, J.F. Errington, R.J.D. Brown, W. Brown, R. Kent, J. Lyons, T. Stonier, A. Wilson, and J. Dodds. At the outset, Coun. Murray read a telegram from Mr F.L. Harris, M.P., congratulating the members of the club and the volunteers, and expressing regret at his absence. A similar telegram was read from Coun. Hewitt, chairman of the committee. Coun. Murray proposed the toast of “The King”, which was enthusiastically drunk. Mr J.T. Heslop submitted “The Army, Navy, and Auxiliary Forces” to which Capt. Baynham and Mr R.J.D. Brown replied. At this juncture Coun. Eskdale took the chair, and at a subsequent period of he evening he presented each of the volunteers with the freedom of the club together with a badge. The following are the names of the men thus honoured: – Corpl. HEPPLE, Troopers PEACOCK, GALLON, ALEXANDER, WILSON, CARR, TEMPLE (Kitchener’s Horse), and SCOTT, and Bomb. McQUEEN, T.V.A.  Messrs HEPPLE, TEMPLE, ALEXANDER, and PEACOCK, were only present.

In making the presentations, the chairman spoke in eulogistic terms of the work of the volunteers in South Africa. He did not think there was any one deserving the name of Englishman who did not give a hearty welcome home to those whom they were about to honour that night. (Hear, hear). They were all imbued with the patriotic idea of defending their country. He had pleasure in presenting each of the volunteers with badges and the freedom of the club, which would entitle them to a life membership. The badges would carry with them the club’s very best wishes, and their appreciation of their services in South Africa, and would show that they admired them as men and Britons. (Applause). Cheers were then raised for the men and their health drunk. Coun. Dodds supplemented the remarks of the chairman. During the evening a capital programme of vocal and instrumental music was rendered.

The volunteers, who were unable to be present, will have their presents forwarded to them.
