PRESENTATION TO A CHESTER-LE-STREET SOLDIER.
Private John THOROUGHGOOD, a reservist, belonging to the King’s Own Royal Lancasters, when the war broke out, left Chester-le-Street, and joined his regiment in South Africa at Christmas, 1899. He was with General Buller through the whole of the arduous campaign in Natal, including the great fights at Spion Kop, Pieters Hill, and the relief of Ladysmith. Altogether, he was in 17 engagements. A week or two since he returned to Chester-le-Street, after serving 13 years with the colours, 10 of which were in foreign service. On Saturday night, a gathering was held at Sergeant Lowther-Anderson’s Crown Inn, Chester-le-Street, Mr Edward Hunwick presiding. When the returned soldier was presented with a watch, chain, and suitably inscribed medal, on behalf of the coke-yard men at Pelton Fell. Sergeant Lowther-Anderson also gave him a pipe and Mrs Lowther-Anderson handed him a silver-mounted cigar holder.
