When the officers and mien of the dredge Hydra and those attending the plant arrived in town on Saturday evening they met together at the Dry Dock to make a presentation to Mr R.G. [sic] GILBERT, one of their shipmates, who is leaving with the Fourth Contingent for South Africa. The presents took the shape of a suitably-inscribed gold pendant and a well-filled purse. Captain Sunners in making the presentation said that he was very pleased to see a representative going from their department. They would follow the movements of the contingent more keenly when one of their mates was with it, and he hoped that the contingent would return, having done credit to Queensland. If Private GILBERT did his duty (which he did not doubt he would) as well in South Africa as he had done whilst in the department he was leaving, he would be a credit to the colony. Private GILBERT thanked them for the present. Several toasts were honoured.
