BACK FROM THE FRONT.

WEST RAINTON VOLUNTEER ENTERTAINED.

A complimentary supper was given in the Drill Hall, West Rainton, on Friday evening, to Sergeant Robert COLMAN, 2nd D.A.V., on his return from South Africa. The supper was followed by a smoking concert. The entertainment was arranged by Major White, who is in command of the 2nd D.A.V. at West Rainton. There was a very good attendance, and ample justice was done to an excellent supper, prepared by Mrs Chapman, of Durham. At the “smoker” Mr Ralph Richardson, J.P., of Field House, presided. The usual loyal toasts were duly honoured, and Major White, in proposing the toast of the evening, bore testimony to the appreciation in which Sergeant COLMAN was held by his comrades. He was the only one out of their company to volunteer for service in South Africa, but he felt sure that many more would have done so had they had the opportunity. It was intended to present Sergt. COLMAN with a handsome gold medal, bit it did not arrive in time. It will be forwarded in a few days, and will be duly presented.

Sergeant COLMAN feelingly responded, and thanked the donors for their gift, and also for the enthusiastic and cordial welcome home which they gave him last Monday (applause). …….

……. The singing of the National Anthem terminated the very pleasant evening’s proceedings.

West Rainton.

PRESENTATION TO A SOLDIER.

Some few weeks ago, on it becoming known that Private John South BRISCOE was returning to West Rainton from Africa, steps were taken towards making him a gift, and the presentation took place in the Drill Hall, West Rainton, on Wednesday evening, the use of the hall being kindly granted by Captain A.C. Thompson, who is in charge of the 2nd D.A.V. at Rainton. The rector of Rainton (the Rev. R.B. Thompson) presided. Captain Thompson said it afforded him great pleasure to present Private BRISCOE with the tokens of their admiration and regard, and wished him long life to enjoy them. The presentation consisted of a beautiful gold medal, a handsome clock, and a purse of gold. The articles bore the following inscription: – “Presented to Private John Briscoe by the inhabitants of the Raintons and District for his services in the Boer War, from 1899 to 1902”.
