WELCOME TO TROOPER MORRIS.
The Masonic Hall, Rockdale, was crowded on Thursday night by a gathering of citizens who had assembled to welcome home Trooper Harry MORRIS, son of Mr Morris, of Rockdale. Trooper MORRIS was a member of the 2nd Mounted Rifles, and returned from the front by the Aurania. The welcome took the form of a smoke evening, and the proceedings throughout were of an enthusiastic character. The Mayor of Rockdale (Alderman Trevarther) presided. Among those present were Aldermen Judd, Roarty, Doust, Gibson, Taylor, Hegarty, the council clerk Mr W.C. Hinwood (Rockdale), the Mayor of Bexley (Alderman H.W. Harradence), Lieutenant Hopkinson (2nd Mounted Rifles), Lieutenant Donaldson (3rd Mounted Rifles), Captain James, Lieutenants Matthews, Saywell, and Colour-sergeant Sharp (Kogarah Company Irish Rifles). The chairman said they were all de-lighted to see that Trooper MORRIS had escaped both bullets and enteric, and returned home safe and sound. All had much to thank those soldiers for who had gone to take part in the battles of the Empire (Cheers). On behalf of the citizens of Rockdale he presented Trooper MORRIS with a handsome gold pendant. He also informed those present that their guest had received a medal for good conduct at the front. Mr Donald Cormack also spoke. The musical portion of the proceedings was of a high-class character. Among those contributing were Messrs A. Geeves, A. Edward, and Johnston, the Mayor of Bexley (Alderman Harradence), Alderman Hegarty (Rockdale), and Mr Will Friske. Mr Vaughan was the accompanist.
