PRESENTATION OF MEDALS.
In the Drill Hall of the 5th V.B. Durham Light Infantry, South Shields, last night, an interesting function took place, five members of the corps, who have returned from the seat of war, being presented with medals, the gift of Mr John Nicholson, South Shields. There was a good turn out of volunteers, under the command of Capt. Taylor, who put the men through a series of drills prior to the presentation.
Mr J. Nicholson, in handing the medallions to Capt. Taylor, gave the men a hearty welcome home. He made reference to the work of the volunteers, who had offered their lives for their country. The medals, he said, were simply an acknowledgment of their noble efforts. (Applause).
Capt. Taylor then handed the medals to Capt. BOWMAN, Colour-Sergeant SMITH, Sergt. HAMILTON, Lance-Corpl. HORNE, and Private W. MENNIE. In so doing, he said hat the medals had been presented by one of their best patrons, Capt. Nicholson. He was pleased to welcome them back again, and he was sure that they would agree with him in saying that Captain Nicholson had acted with a patriotic and noble spirit (Applause).
Capt. J.B. BOWMAN returned thanks, on behalf of the men and himself, after which the corps gave a drill exhibition, which was witnessed by a fairly good crowd of townspeople.
