WELCOME TO NORTH STAFFORDSHIRE RAILWAY ENGINEERS.
A numerously-attended meeting was held at the Red Lion Hotel, Stoke, on the evening of the 15th inst. to welcome two of the employees of the engineering department of the North Staffordshire Railway, who have returned from active service in South Africa. The returned men were Priv. J. ROBERTS, a Reservist of the 2nd North, who had been away for two years and eight months, and took part in Lord Roberts’s sweeping operations and occupation of Pretoria, and L.-Sergt. W.R. MATTHEWS, a Volunteer of the Trentham Company, who went out with the Second Volunteer Service Company. Priv. ROBERTS was presented on behalf of his workmates with a handsome silver lever watch, with suitable inscription, and in responding thanked his fellow workmen for the handsome gift and for their generous contributions to the support of his wife and children during his absence. L.-Sergt. MATTHEWS was presented with a gold medal suitably inscribed.
