Bridport News, 26th January 1900
Mr H. Jeans, of Surbiton, writes enclosing a newspaper cutting, having reference to presentations made to seven residents of that town who are gone out for service with the second detachment of the City of London Imperial Volunteers. Amongst these is Mr F.W. DEVENISH, son of Mr William Devenish, of Surbiton, and grandson of Mr John Devenish, of Shipton Gorge, and of the Late Mr Thomas Way, of North Allington. At a smoking concert they were each presented by Mr Bird, vice-chairman, with a handsome gold medal, suitably inscribed, and two tablets of soap from Mr C. Martin. To each, Mr Bird spoke encouraging words and wished them “good luck”, and a safe return, hoping they would look back with pride on having so many friends in Surbiton. The inscriptions on the medals were: “C.L.I.V., Transvaal, 1900”, and the recipient’s name on the front, and “Good Luck from Surbiton friends” on the back. Four of the seven, who are all old boys of St Mark’s were presented by the masters and present boys with silver match-boxes, containing the following inscriptions: “S.M. Schools, Surbiton, Transvaal, 1900”.
