A pleasing little ceremony took place on the parade ground before the assembly of the battalion on Saturday morning, Private J. HAVARD, of the Talgarth Company, who went out on active service to South Africa, being presented by the members of his corps and other friends with a handsome silver watch and gold albert and pendant. Capt. D.W.E. Thomas, in making the presentation, said that the company felt glad to welcome Pt. HAVARD home from South Africa, and especially to see him looking so well. They hoped he would long live to wear the watch, which would remind him of the duty he had done for his country in the time of need.

Pt. HAVARD briefly responded. He said he had done his duty to the best of his ability, and he hoped he would be spared to serve in the Talgarth company for another twenty years.

Inside the watch was inscribed “Presented to Private J. Havard, ‘F’ Company 1st V.B., S.W.B., by ‘F’ Company and friends, on his return from South Africa”. On one side of the gold pendant Private Havard’s initials were inscribed, and on the other the letters “V.B., S.W.B.”  The watch was supplied by Mr J.L. Owens, jeweller, Talgarth, and the arrangements for the presentation were made by Surgeon-Lieut. Hubert Williams, Sergts. Tom Davies and Evan Powell.
