PRESENTATION TO A SOLDIER-POSTMAN.
A most successful smoking concert was held at Wood’s Hotel on Tuesday evening under the auspices of the Postal Staff, to do honour to Trooper A. PENWILL, postman, of Seton Karr’s Sharpshooters, who recently returned from the war. Mr Skinner, Inspector of Postmen, presided. There was a large gathering. Among the visitors present were Messrs Day and J. James, of the 24th Battalion of Rough Riders and J. Parish, 3rd Hussars. Mr J, Young sent a telegram wishing all a pleasant evening and regretting that absence from town prevented him from attending. Sergt.-Major Cameron, Rifle Volunteers, wrote regretting his inability to attend. During the evening, Mr Skinner, on behalf of the Postal Staff, presented Trooper PENWILL with a gold albert and pendant appropriately inscribed, as a memento of the time when he responded to his country’s call. Trooper PENWILL suitably acknowledged the gifts. Songs were sung by Messrs Day, James, Border, Parr, Bovey, Sercombe, and Hore, the mandolin quartet, Messrs Sercombe, Chudley, Perring, and W.J. Yelland played selections, and Perring gave flute solos. Mr Skinner exhibited a gramophone.
